Major Phil Packer The major who makes obstacles seem minor

If you were watching News at Ten over recent weeks, you will remember the week long feature of a disabled climber who was using only his arms to climb El Capitan in California - that was Major Phil Packer. Whilst on active service with the British Army in Iraq, Major Packer was injured during a rocket attack in Basra becoming trapped under a runaway vehicle which caused permanent damage to his spinal chord, paralysing him from the waist down.

To take more control over his life Phil began to take on sporting challenges. First, rowing across the English Channel having never rowed before; then completing the London Marathon in a time of two weeks; before taking on El Capitan which required 4254 pull ups and four days to get to the top. It's all part of his quest to raise £1 million for the charity Help the Heroes and incredibly, Phil has another 14 challenges planned.

On becoming a myplace ambassador Phil stressed that his life now is about helping young disabled people to engage in activities and to set up his own centre dedicated to their needs. Shortly after his session with the myplace support team Phil was contacted by the Prime Minister's office to arrange a personal briefing about his new plans when he meets with Gordon Brown in the next few weeks.

Major Packer recently visited the myplace project in Brent with another Ambassador Sir Steve Redgrave.  Read about their visit in our feature article and see the pictures of the visit in the myplace photostream.
