Lancs youth are driving force behind £1.3 million super centreYoungsters across Nelson will be celebrating a job well done, thanks to the success of Bradley Youth Hub, a dynamic new expansion project awarded over £1,335,000 announced through the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ myplace programme. Supporting one of the most deprived areas in England, the new centre, based in Nelson, will link up with existing services, providing a programme of open access facilities and activities. The project will bring together over 450 young people aged 11 to 25 from many different backgrounds, and ensure that local youngsters have somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. The centre will include a mini-MUGA sports activity area, IT facilities, basic literacy and numeracy skills courses, careers, training and employment information. Youngsters will also be able to to access pregnancy advice and sexual health services. Not forgetting budding thespians, artists and musicians, the centre will offer studio and performance workshop areas for arts, music and drama, and a café with Internet access. Residential courses will also be on the menu, with a range of team building exercises and special visits to places of interest, and for those who like a bit of an outdoor challenge there will be opportunities to take part in a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. County Councillor Jennifer Mein, cabinet member for children and young people said: "The success of the £1.3 million myplace funding bid is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved - especially the young people of Nelson. "They have driven this ambitious project forward since the very beginning, from having the idea to helping plan the building, and I am extremely proud of them. "The combination of facilities that the new project will provide, in buildings of exceptional quality and design, will have an enormous impact on what is on offer for young people in the area."
