Multi-million pound youth zone brings Carlisle youth onside

Young people in Carlisle will have their own state-of-the-art Youth Zone complete with climbing wall, sports hall and arts area, made possible by a Government grant of close to £5 million pounds.

The grant worth £4,980,234 will bring about major improvements to the lives of local young people aged eight – 21 years old. Open seven days a week until 10.00pm the Youth Zone will give them more opportunities and a fun, safe and productive place to spend their time. As well as the football, basketball, netball, boxing and climbing on offer there will be chances to get involved in music and creative arts and areas for one-to-one advice on a range of issues.

Jeremy Glover, OnSide Northwest, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for young people in Carlisle. Securing myplace funding of close to £5 million is just awesome. There is a formidable local partnership in place and I’m confident that they will now go on and build one of the best new youth centres in the country. It is exactly what the young people of Carlisle asked for and exactly what they deserve.”

Local young people were surveyed to find out what they wanted at the project and helped architects develop the designs. They will also have ongoing involvement in how it is run and the activities that take place.

The Carlisle Youth Zone will be built adjoining the Richard Rose Central Academy which will act as a project partner, along with Cumbria County Council and the University of Cumbria.
