Press Release - Dawlish Integrated Youth Centre |
Youth centre in Dawlish gets £1.7M go aheadYoung people in Dawlish will soon have a place to call their own after receiving news of a Government pledge of £1.7m to build a world-class youth centre in the town. The money will see the creation of a new, two-storey facility at Sandy Lane managed by Devon County Council in partnership with local charity Dawlish Action for Youth (DAY). The centre will house a range of facilities for 13-19 year olds including a recording studio and editing suite, an area for games and socialising, and disco area with a DJ booth. There will also be an IT suite, office area, and facilities where young people can learn vocational skills such as building, carpentry, hairdressing and electrics. The news of funding for the Dawlish project follows years of planning and campaigning by the council and local young people, who have played a key role in the project’s design and development. John Smith, deputy leader of DCC and executive councillor for children's services, said: "The news is rich reward for the young people of Dawlish and the surrounding area who have been at the heart of this campaign to build a suitable centre for modern youth work. For over seven years they have been working with us and actively fundraising for this centre. It is a true partnership and shows what can really be achieved if everyone pulls in the same direction and keeps young people's needs at the heart of their thinking." The centre will be open during the evenings, weekends, and school holidays, and activities such as sports and games, drama and arts and media, will be designed and offered in response to what young people in the area want. As well as offering social and educational facilities, young people will be able to use the facility to access information, advice and guidance on any issues they face, with plans for county council youth workers and other support organisations to be based on-site. Total Award: £1,700,000 |
