joinedupdesign for myplaceMyplace is all about empowering young people to reach their full potential, so any opportunity for them to use their creative powers to give something back to the community has to be worth taking.

The Sorrell Foundation selected 15 myplace projects from around the country to take part in their joinedupdesign scheme, which gives young people the chance to act as clients during the design process of their own facilities. Specially chosen client groups from each centre were joined up with creative teams made up of architects, branding experts and advisers.

Keith Priest, of Fletcher Priest Architects, said: "This kind of engagement benefits the participants enormously. It expands their agenda, raises their expectations, exposes them to new aspects of life, and having their views taken seriously is hugely beneficial."

The final creations were translated into design concepts - which allowed the young people to see how ideas can be turned into something tangible if they're willing to put in the work and see it through to the end. It's important to have young people involved in the design of their own facilities, as they will take pride in them, and feel ownership of them - but it's not just the ‘clients' who benefitted from the project.

Some of the architects and experts had never worked with young people before, and were unaware of their abilities and talents. Young people aren't as closed off to ideas and aren't restricted by the same negative experiences and boundaries as older people.

joinedupdesign for myplaceWhilst there are some lessons that can't be ignored but are often harder to learn, such as how to keep within budget constraints, exchanging ideas with young people can produce more creative, exciting designs than their more practical, older colleagues would have been able to imagine. Therefore it's not just the young people who came away wiser than before - the architects and Foundation members did too, so they've decided to share their new found wisdom with Joinedupdesign for myplace: a new guide which lays out the programme step by step and imparts advice to those looking to involve young people in the design of their own facilities.

There are some top design tips by young people for their peers on how to make the most of their myplace centre - and what works best for them and their communities. To find out more about this exciting project, or just to get some great ideas on design, have a look at the guide.
