Young people in Leicester are looking forward to having a place to call their own after scooping a £5 million grant.

Leicester City Youth Hub will consist of six themed zones, each offering different activities and spaces where young people can meet. Activities on offer are anticipated to include a climbing wall, skateboard and BMX track, sports area, performing arts space, recording studio, dance and aerobics rooms and a library and research centre.

The project, led by Leicester City Council, aims to bring young people aged 13-19 together from diverse backgrounds, including those facing challenges such as lack of confidence and self-esteem, social isolation and discrimination.

Leicester City Youth Hub will also offer counselling for vulnerable youngsters. Connexions, Teenage Pregnancy Services and the Children’s Information Service will provide support and advice on a range of issues such as sexual health.

World Class provision

Big Lotto's criteria for a youth hub specifies being able to offer a world class service and experience to young people. Myplace Leicester will be meeting this challenge by offering:

  • Excellence in service provision
  • High quality equipment for all activities
  • Experienced and qualified staffing
  • A state of the art ICT infrastructure.

The ICT specification was approved by the Myplace Project Board in September and will ensure our ICT operations and service provision are second to none. Many thanks to Graeme Gardner, our ICT guru, for a sterling effort with this!

Asbestos Update

The Council commissioned the removal of all asbestos throughout the building which should take about 10 weeks to complete. We are now hoping to commence this work in January 2010.

Partnership agreements

Real partnership is a key criterion for both the Council and Big Lotto grant providers. To ensure the Council and its partners understand their roles and responsibilities, a partnership agreement is being drawn up with partners to define areas such as project purpose, outcomes and governance arrangements.

Internal Council partners or departments will also have memorandums of understanding drawn up while external agencies will have service level agreements.

These will be appended to the partnership agreement and will define in more detail the specific services and activities each partner is committing to deliver. A list of our current service provider includes:

  • The Young People's Council
  • Connexions
  • NHS Leicester
  • 2Funky Arts
  • Open Door Counselling
  • Children's Information Service
  • Leicester Stride
