Voluntary Action Luton will use their £4,753,800 grant to create a contemporary building in the centre of town offering activities such as media production, a range of sports, art, music, street dance and a cookery club. Young people from age 13 will be able to use the facilities which are expected to be open from 10am to 11pm seven days a week. Monthly comedy and music nights will feature acts specifically chosen by the young people.
Support services offered will include advice on welfare, employment, education and sexual health. Partners for the project include Luton Borough Council, NHS Luton and the Youth Offending Team. Local cultural and special interest groups including an Asian Girls Club, ethnic cooking group, and drama and fitness clubs will use the site and offer services. A Young Adults with Needs (YAWN) group will offer activities for young people up to the age of 24 with disabilities.
Everton Blake, Executive Director, Voluntary Action Luton, said: "We are delighted to have been successful, as this was a highly competitive programme. Voluntary Action Luton and its partners were able to work with Luton's young people to show a need and a desire to work together to fill an identified service gap. The partnership has demonstrated that a great deal can be achieved by working collaboratively to meet community needs."
This youth-led new build project will offer activities including media production, sports, art, music, street dance and cookery club. It will benefit young people aged 13-19 (up to 24 for young people with disabilities) from across Luton including young people in care or in hostels, young people not in education and young offenders. Support services will include advice on employment, education and sexual health. Opening hours are expected to be from 10:00am up to 11:00pm seven days a week.
