myplace scores a winner with FA twinning scheme

Monday, 31 August 2009 09:30

brooking_packer_primarollo_redgraveFootball legend Sir Trevor Brooking joined myplace ambassador Sir Steve Redgrave CBE for an event at Wembley.

The two sporting greats were joined by the inspirational former Iraq solider, Major Phil Packer, who suffered paralysis following a war injury, yet learned to walk again and completed the London marathon this year.

The event at Wembley stadium was to launch a much anticipated twinning initiative between the Football Association and DCSF's myplace.  Dawn Primarolo, Minister for Children and Young People, was also in attendance at the event.

Young people from myplace projects up and down the country were invited along to the home of football to check out the impressive facilities that Wembley has to offer and listen to motivational speeches delivered by the high profile guests.

Sir Trevor spoke about the benefits of football in promoting team spirit on and off the pitch and recalled some fond memories of playing for his beloved West Ham.

Eyebrows were raised when Major Packer suggested doing an abseil down the side of Wembley and invited Ms Primarolo to join him!

Everyone tucked into a buffet lunch laid on by the FA before taking part in a press photo call beside the famous Bobby Moore statue.  An article has since appeared on the sports pages of the London papers with various news agencies also picking up on the story.
