Carlisle Youth Zone |

A core of young people, previously known as the "library group", have campaigned for a youth centre in Carlisle for three years, and now through myplace, are finally beginning to get what they, and the young people of Carlisle, have been crying out for. The thing that really impressed me was the lengths management, at a ground level, were willing to go to make sure the young people were given the opportunity to see other high standard youth centres for inspiration and ideas. The young people visited four different leading centres in and around London, including the Salmon centre producing a video as part of this process on what they liked and disliked about each one to present to management, partners and other stakeholders.
This professionally edited video enabled these young people to voice their opinions on the other centres to partners, offering a valuable insight in to what they want their youth centre to be, whilst reaffirming their massive importance in the projects' involvement. Obviously this trip with the young people must have had a substantial cost; paying for travel, accommodation, film production, etc along with a large amount of paper work. But it's nice to see projects making the effort and investment to get young people involved and seeing what others have done, which I believe will pay off with a fantastic myplace centre in the long run.
