Secrets in the Stones

St Mary-in-the-Castle a myplace centre for Hastings

It could almost have been a scene from The Da Vinci Code. myplace Ambassador Lord Mawson paced backwards and forwards as he breathed in the atmosphere of the magnificent circular auditorium of St Mary-in-the-Castle.

Marvelling at the classical architecture borrowed from ancient Greece and Rome by Georgian visionaries, he stopped his pacing for a moment. "The secrets are in the stones" he said. "To make this place a success in the future, you have to understand the thinking of the people who laid these stones - the secrets of success lie in these stones".

Hmmm. Could the secrets be in the stones? What was going through the minds of the people who built this amazing structure way back in 1823? How could it possibly have any relevance to today?

Well today, St Mary-the-castle is a Grade II* listed church at the centre of a magnificent Georgian terrace and with a subterranean connection to Britain's first ever shopping mall. It sits in a magnificent position built up into the cliff face overlooking the sea.

When it was built this was a remarkable vision for a place that was little more than a cliff face jutting out towards the sea. It was a ‘nowhere' place which became a ‘somewhere' place because of a bold and, at the time, futuristic scheme. Its architects embraced change - cutting back a substantial tract of the cliffs in order to create the space. They also understood the importance of connectedness and sustainability.

Connectedness - because the whole development provided a place to live, worship and be entertained, with public rooms, leisure and shopping areas in the arcade below. The mix of uses brought a range of income sources making the whole thing financially sustainable. Even the church was not a drain on resources. Of the 1500 pews, only 200 were available free. The rest were on an annual rental or available by buying a ticket.

So, back to Lord Mawson "They created something amazing here out of a ‘nowhere' place by thinking big and looking to the future. It became a magnet because of its boldness, the geography was irrelevant. Their awareness of how things were connected enabled them to create a sustainable business model for well over 100 years" he said. "If you were able to speak to the people who laid these stones, they would tell you that those were the secrets of their success. They are just as relevant today for myplace centres as they were then".

St Mary-in-the-Castle is about to be reborn as a stunning arts & cultural hub for young people. This will feature a live performance space to give young people unique insights into culture and creativity; spaces for music, digital arts, live arts and enterprise; a café with work and training opportunities; a base for youth focused organisations; and a place for young people to hang out and access support.

Mel Bonney-Kane of Hastings Trust is leading the project. She said "With our young people, we have created a new and exciting vision for St Mary-in-the-Castle. It's one that we believe would resonate nicely with those who had the original vision of an exciting place which met a range of needs. Ours is a vision which looks to the future whilst respecting the past". She is adamant that this is more than just a place to go. She adds "Young people will get the opportunities that they have been demanding for a long time - access to services, opportunities to learn new skills and pathways into the new college and university centre, which in the past they may not have had the confidence to follow".

Just like the original scheme this amazing myplace centre will have a mix of income sources, including opening up the venue for public performances of all kinds which will also help to build a greater connection with the wider community.

This stunning building, the futuristic vision and an empathy with the past, will surely make this an iconic myplace centre. One which can unlock the secrets of success, because they are there - in the stones.
