Denis Donoghue |
Denis is Research Director for Hall Aitken and is responsible for celebrating Lead Practice across the eight themes relating to the myplace programme. He is also responsible for evaluating the impact of the myplace funding on young people and communities. Denis went to school in Aberdeen and then studied for a BSc in Town and Regional Planning in Dundee. In 2003, he started a part-time Masters in Local Economic Development at Glasgow University, funded by Hall Aitken. ‘It was a very useful course and highly relevant to my work’ says Denis, who finished his dissertation and graduated, with distinction, in summer 2008. He started his career as a Town Planner and worked in Morecombe doing tourism research. Denis returned to Dundee University after a year or so to work on a housing research project and then developed affordable housing projects in Sterling. He returned to Planning with jobs in Falkirk and then Ayrshire, producing local development plans for communities, managing small project budgets and planning appeals. Denis’ first consultancy job was in Halcrow, Edinburgh, working on regeneration studies. ‘My proudest moment was making a presentation to the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs at the Scottish Parliament,’ explains Denis. ‘It’s great to know that some research actually influences decision-making at the highest level.’ But that isn’t all Denis has to be proud of. He completed his first half-marathon recently, having taken up running aged 32, and is pretty keen on climbing, snowboarding, mountain biking and rugby. ‘It’s the unexpected moments of joy that bring the most pleasure, like climbing an Icelandic mountain before the sun rose in October.’
