Founded in 1967, New Horizon Youth Centre offers young people aged between 16-21 alternatives to risky lifestyles in the sex industry that thrives in and around Kings Cross. Many of the centre's clients use drugs. Many have mental health problems. Many have been physically and/or sexually abused.

New Horizon enables these young people to improve their life-chances by gaining skills and knowledge, and to help them move from adolescence into adulthood.

The centre helps up to 3,000 young people a year and is open seven days a week. The services it offers include:

  • accommodation advice and support
  • education and training programmes.
  • youth activities, sports, gym and football
  • award-winning healthcare
  • job search and placements
  • dugs advice and assessments
  • street outreach work
  • practical services such as food, laundry, showers and clothes

Channel 4 broadcaster Jon Snow has been involved with the centre since the 1970s. He started his working career as co-coordinator in 1970 and worked for three years with the late Lord Longford, who founded the centre in 1967. He is a hands-on chair who regularly attends the centre to give out certificates of achievement, talk to young people and even beat them at table tennis.
