The Spotlight Youth Centre project in Tower Hamlets is awarded £3.8 million and is led by Poplar Housing and Regeneration Community Association (HARCA). Working with local young people, the project aims to create a building to match the design and build quality of nearby Canary Wharf.

Sumaia Mashal, aged 19, Chair of our Youth Empowerment Board, said: "This really is a breakthrough for all residents in the area. No more bored teenagers hanging around corners with nothing to do.Over the past 8 months, young and old residents alike have worked with enthusiasm and passion to establish the idea of a new generation of facilities for young people. Ideas from visits to other youth centres and suggestions from local residents were combined to build something that was unique and adaptable to Poplar youth. We look forward to carrying on working closely with architects to produce a 'Young People's London landmark."

Through the activities including MC'ing, dance, cookery, basketball and a range of support services the project also aims to provide new chances and opportunities for local young people and help to tackle some of their problems including training and education needs, teenage pregnancy, obesity, substance abuse and gang violence. The centre will be open to any young people in the area aged 13 to 19 years old seven days a week and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, providing a safe space for young people to spend time in and socialise as well as take advantage of the advice and other services available.

Helping to deliver the project will be partners including Langdon Park School and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Babu Bhattacherjee, Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods, Poplar HARCA, said: "Our young people are amazing and they have worked incredibly hard to get Poplar a world class youth centre. This centre will give our young people the chance to fulfil many of their hopes and ambitions - they deserve the best and I am delighted that we can finally turn our plans into reality."

This youth-led project will create an iconic building to match the design of nearby Canary Wharf. It will bring together local young people aged 13 to 19 from some of the most deprived areas in England and benefit young people dealing with teenage pregnancy, obesity, substance abuse and gang violence. Activities offered will include a range of sports, music, cookery, dance and MC'ing as well as counselling, and training. The project will open seven days a week and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
