The Minehead EYE project in Somerset is preparing itself for this summer's big opening. Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July will see a host of events taking place to celebrate the launch of the world-class centre and skatepark, and myplace ambassador and Radio One DJ Ras Kwame is going to be there to do the honours.
On the Saturday morning the event will be aimed at younger children and their parents, with lots of arts and crafts and other activities such as circus workshops.
Later on the Saturday there will be workshops and demonstrations on a variety of activities such as beatboxing, dance and graffiti. In the evening there is a big party planned with local DJs and bands.
The Sunday is going to be geared around skating and the new skate park, where local skating talent will be showing of their skills. There will also be a photography competition and a drumming workshop.
Project director Naomi Griffith is really looking forward to the opening and thinks the centre will be a huge boost for the area.
She said: "We can't wait for the launch. We have so much planned, it's really exciting. It's going to be great to have Ras coming along too, we're hoping he might stick around for the party too.
"The centre is going to be great for the young people in the area, it will give them a place to meet their friends and enjoy a variety of activities. We're also really pleased with the skatepark as it will give skaters a safe and friendly environment to go."
The Minehead EYE facility will be aimed at 13-19 year olds and will feature a café, shop and computer area with a viewing gallery that overlooks a 550m², two-storey skate and BMX park. It will also boast a recording studio and DJ booth, a multi-media suite with rehearsal space and an exhibition area with an art-graffiti wall.
Shortly after the launch we will have more on what went on, so be sure to check back then.
