Press Release - New Life Centre

World-class youth centre to breathe new life into Hartlepool

Young people in Hartlepool will be able to take part in dance, music and drama at a new specialist performing arts project – The New Life Centre. The youth-led project will be built using a multi-million pound myplace grant.

The government grant of over £4.5million is awarded to the Headland Development Trust in Hartlepool to develop the state-of-the-art centre, as part of the myplace programme

For young people aged 13 to 19 years old in Hartlepool the £4,516,000 to create the New Life Centre will make a huge difference to their lives, giving them opportunities to record their own music, try all varieties of dance and perform in improvised and rehearsed theatre. Young people have been involved in designing the new project and will have an ongoing say in what arts-based activities take place. It will provide a place they can call their own and for those disadvantaged by low incomes, difficulties at school or home and at risk of anti-social behaviour, it will provide them with a safe place to spend their time and take pride in.

Mike Young, Youth Project Coordinator, Headland Development Trust, said: “Our vision was led by young people, to create a place of leisure with a focus on performing arts with a view to working in partnership with public, private and third sector organisations and agencies to ensure the best possible services are delivered for the community we serve. The young people involved will be absolutely ecstatic and will form a key driving force as the development of the project gets under way and we are keen to ensure that they continue to steer the projects' path with the partners.

“The achievement of bringing of £4.5 million pounds to Hartlepool we would not of thought possible. We trust that we will be equally successful in establishing the New Life Centre as a world class venue that will inspire old and young alike!"

The state-of-the-art project will be open seven days a week and will operate in partnership with St Hild’s Church of England School, on whose disused playing field the project will be built, Northern School of Music and Minto Music, an organisation that specialises in music recording.
