Branding seminar report

branding_seminars"I really enjoyed it all - an excellent event"

Working with the Sorrell Foundation (http://www.thesorrellfoundation.com) the support team ran a successful event to help myplace projects think about branding. With over fifty participants converging on the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre in London, the event seems to have struck a chord.

Participants included young people and youth workers from projects, BIG staff, support team staff and a short invasion by young people who had been working nearby on a photography project.

Interbrand (http://www.interbrand.com) - one of the world's leading branding agencies - explored how graphic design, photography and words can combine to deliver a powerful marketing message. A short writing exercise had many groups crafting instructions to boil an egg in the style of Agent Provocateur (most cannot be repeated here).

After an outstanding buffet lunch Graphic Thought Facility (http://www.graphicthoughtfacility.com) a London-based graphic design consultancy, explained a little more about how the branding process works. Using the example of a myplace project they are working with, Andy Stevenson gave tips on getting appropriate support from designers and branding companies. John Davidson of Streetscape (http://www.streetscapeuk.com ), a youth design agency, led the final part of the day. Working through a series of short exercises small groups worked up specifications for a brand identity that could then form the basis of a cost-effective relationship with an external designer.

For many participants the day opened up new possibilities for "selling" their projects to young people and to potential supporters. There was clearly potential for more work as many participants commented that they'd like to have spent longer, to cover more marketing topics and to get specific one-to-one support.

As a result the support team are now working to deliver two more full-day workshops on marketing, backed up with a workbook and a set of clear guidance notes. Our plan is to run one such seminar in the north and one in the south during autumn.

We will try to comply with the wishes of one participant who said:

"Events to be held on rainy days instead of sunny ones"
