They cover all sorts of information such as youth justice, youth work, social care, education and lots more. They are the go-to place for all the up-to-date news on children and young people (aside from myplace of course), and they recently held their annual conference in London.
Taking place at the Ibis Hotel, a stone throw away from Earl's Court, the Practical Tools to Measure Impacts & Outcomes Effectively conference-come-exhibition saw a host of speakers and organisations showcasing how they are involved with children and young people's services. There were representatives from several councils throughout the UK, including Shropshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Staffordshire, all giving practical examples of how Authorities have cost effectively met and gone beyond performance indicators. There was also an appearance by a senior representative from Ofsted, who spoke about how impacts and outcomes are assessed in learning institutions and about what is expected of teachers by the inspectorates.
However, the standout presentation was by Harrow Council and their Youth Parliament. Alongside their Corporate Director of Children's Services, Paul Clark, the Youth Representatives gave an engaging speech on how they have maximized youth engagement and involvement in Harrow. They told how they have grown from a token organisation into an influential group who now hold their own debates and Q&A sessions in which only children and young people are allowed to attend. The young speakers managed to enthrall the audience and were treated to the biggest round of applause of the day. The talk proved so popular that they were asked to stay longer to conduct a Q&A session, of which there were several people wanting to ask questions as well as praise the young people for their commendable work.
Paul Clarke was pleased with how the Young Representatives were received. He said: "They have worked really hard and for them to get a reception like that is great, they deserve it."
Some of the organisations that exhibited stands at the conference included: the Department for Children School and Families; management consultants Ant Able; and C4EO, the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People's Services. myplace also had a stand at the show and it proved to be very popular with most of the literature and handouts disappearing early on in the day.
Ian Hepburn from the myplace Support Team was very impressed by the level of interest generated. He said: "We've had loads of people interested in myplace and come to have a chat about what we do. We've also had quite a lot who already know who we are which is also really pleasing."
