Extra funding available to support volunteers

Monday, 30 November 2009 10:43

capacity_builders_logoThere are many organisations, projects and schemes throughout the country that rely on volunteers. They do some amazing and inspirational work, and do it without receiving a penny. However, they do require training, support and assistance and this is not always available as money is often spent elsewhere.

However, support specialists Capacitybuilders are to take advantage of nearly one million pounds of bursary funding to help train volunteer managers and support workers. This will ensure they get the best out of their volunteers and the volunteers themselves get all the support they need.

The funding is being released through the Office of the Third Sector Volunteer Management programme in April.

Capacitybuilders will use the money to provide development programmes on two levels. The first is based around those working with volunteers on a day-to-day basis, whilst the second is geared more towards management and strategic responsibilities.

Both will involve tried and tested programmes, based on the National Occupational Standards in Volunteer Management, and will offer optional accreditation.

Angela Smith, Minister for the Third Sector, said: "This key element of the Volunteer Management Programme will create a legacy of confident and skilled volunteer managers. This programme will enable volunteer managers to be better connected to existing support, share knowledge effectively and raise awareness of the benefits of good volunteer management. These outcomes will help to strengthen the sector during these challenging economic times."
