He comes from a land down under

Thursday, 29 October 2009 10:42

paul_briggsAboriginal leader Paul Briggs took time out of his whistle-stop trip to Europe to meet with Malcolm McClean of the myplace Support Team. The two originally met five years ago during a live video link up between London and Rumbalara, an Aboriginal community about two hours north of Melbourne. Ever since then they have been trying to meet face to face.

One of Paul's big achievements has been through the use of sport, specifically Aussie Rules football and netball, to address the spiritual, emotional and physical well being of people. Now in a joint venture with The University of Melbourne he's created ASHE Academy of Sport Health and Education using sport as an incentive for indigenous young people to broaden their education.

He was quite taken by myplace and wanted to know how they could connect up. As a result we've invited Paul to bring a group of Aboriginal young people over to the myplace festival to perform. Paul agreed to go back to see if he could organise the funding. This is a good opportunity for myplace projects to make an interesting connection and perhaps set up some twinning arrangement between the young people.

We look forward to hearing from Paul when he get's back home and to sharing the lessons of myplace with the land down under.
