Make your mark with a tennerYoung people are being encouraged to become entrepreneurs and make a difference this March in England.

The Big Lottery Fund is backing this year's Make your mark with a tenner initiative with a £250,000 grant to Enterprise UK, which organises the campaign.

Deputy director of policy and partnerships at the Big Lottery Fund (England), Margaret Cooney, said: ‘This is a unique opportunity to get some real hands-on experience of entrepreneurship with real money, and offers a chance for initiative and creativity to shine through."

Better yet, all young people who take part in the competition will receive a certificate outlining the skills they have developed and the winning team will win some start up capital and support from a business mentor to help them develop their entrepreneurialideas.

Make your mark loans young people aged 19 and under £10 and challenges them to make as much profit and social impact as they can by starting their own enterprise to benefit their community.

This gives young people the chance to live the life of an entrepreneur, and to feel the rewards of coming up with ideas that pay off for their local communities.

More than 16,000 young people took part last year, with the top 50 entries making an average profit of £261.

The Big Lottery grant will be used to extend the initiative into areas of England where young people have previously had little opportunity to gain experience in social enterprise.

This is an opportunity for ambitious young people, like those in myplace projects, to show enterprising spirit and make as much profit as possible whilst doing something good for their home town.

Youth groups and members, teachers and students, are encouraged to get involved with this programme, which gives young people the chance to join in with a well supported real enterprise activity.

The Tenner month is about fun, healthy competition which builds on enterprise capabilities and improves young people's financial understanding and risk taking skills, which are vital in the modern business world.

Furthermore, this is all about social enterprise, so young people learn socially conscious ways to make money for good causes.

Exposure to real enterprise activities gives young people a taste of what running a real venture could be like and this could inspire them into seriously thinking about more exciting enterprisingactivities.

Once registered to take part Make your mark provides projects with a bank of resources to support both themselves and their young people through the programme including launch videos, a student logbook, top tip sheets and a toolkit.

They will also try to arrange a visit from one of their entrepreneurial ambassadors or business volunteers for the school /youth centre during ‘Tennermonth'.
