OnSide is a new charity set up to build a network of 21st century Youth Zones across the North West that will give young people top quality, purpose-built, safe and affordable places to go in their leisure time.Funded by the North West Development Agency with additional support from the regional private sector, OnSide was set up to develop strong local partnerships within the public and private sectors to help build world-class, town and city centre facilities for young people. The new Youth Zones are based on the successful model of the Bolton Lads and Girls Club which has received national recognition for its award-winning mentoring programme as well as the first-class, 363 days-a-year service it offers the 3,000 young people who walk through its doors each week. The capital funding for the projects in Oldham, Manchester, Blackburn and Carlisle is being provided by the Department for Children Schools and Families through its myplace programme, administered by BIG Funding. OnSide's ultimate vision is to help provide every town and city in the UK with a successful and sustainable Youth Zone where all young people can go to socialise, be safe, develop positive values and enjoy a real sense of purpose. They start to spend their leisure time on the streets ... where trouble is often just around the corner.Yet talk to these young people and it is clear that this is not how they want to lead their lives, ask them what they want and they make a simple request for somewhere decent to go which is safe and affordable, offering something positive to do and perhaps - most importantly of all - someone to talk to when they need it. This is what all OnSide's new Youth Zones will try to deliver, allowing young people across the North West the chance to enjoy their leisure time in a safe and nurturing environment."
