cityofculturelogoCast your minds all the way back to 2008 and you'll remember that Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture. It was hugely celebrated in and around the city and brought in a massive amount of interest, revenue and exposure. And this is what the UK City of Culture could do for you.

Obviously on a slightly smaller scale than the European equivalent, the accolade will be decided upon this summer and the chosen area will become the City of Culture in 2013. The winner will be chosen from the following:

Barnsley

Derry

Portsmouth and Southampton

Birmingham

Durham

Southend

Carlisle

Hull and East Yorkshire

Sheffield

Chichester

Ipswich and the Haven Gateway

Swansea

Cornwall

Norwich

It is an incredibly prestigious award and one that will see the Turner Prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year and The Brit Awards all move there in the future. It is also a wonderful opportunity for your myplace centre to get involved.

Myplace projects around the country are brimming with culture and could provide a potential bid with hordes of enthusiastic young people and world class youth facilities to show off.

If you have a myplace project in one of the above areas then you need to contact your Local Authority and ask to speak to whoever the bid leader is. There you will be able to find out what your centre can do and how it can be involved. You can send them design sketches, photographs, and make them aware of your production plan over the next few years.

This is a great chance for your myplace centre to help your city grab that award. And even if you don't win, you will have done some important networking and drummed up some publicity for your project. You really do have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And if you are in any doubt what such an award can do for your city then check out these statistics from Liverpool's 2008 European Capital of Culture year.
