Press Release - OPEN Central

Youngsters to scale new heights with Norfolk youth centre

A proposed world-class youth venue hosting a vibrant programme of music, dance and theatre has received a funding fillip with a Government grant of close to £1.3 million.

The funding is going to the Open Youth Trust’s OPEN Central project in Norwich, Norfolk, as part of a share out announced from the myplace grants scheme.

OPEN Central will breathe new life into a grade-two listed building, creating a modern meeting place for young people aged 13-25 but, more specifically, those under the age of 18. The world-class centre, designed by those who will use it, will include a venue for live music, theatre and other arts-based activities, a space for a health clinic, a challenging climbing wall, and educational kitchen and café.

Young people will hit the dance floor in their very own nightclub, complete with healthy juice bar and DJ booth. Those who are happier making music won’t lose out either, as they can get creative in recording studios and video editing suites. Internet-ready computers in a study area will allow users to stay connected with the world around them.

Russ Dacre, Project Director, said: “We’re delighted to be granted this award for the OPEN Central project. The funding will fast-track our project, enabling the provision of world class facilities and services for the young people of Norfolk from early Summer 2009. Hopefully the joined up thinking and action from all sectors with young people can help to encourage and inspire similar projects across the country.”

Jonathan Clark, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the Eastern region, said: “Young people are best placed to know what kinds of activities and services they want and need in their local area, and this funding for OPEN Central is designed to empower and support them to make those ideas a reality. It will not only have a positive impact on their own lives and that of their friends, but also the wider community.”
