Press Release - Pegasus Theatre - Building the Future

Stage set to build bright future for young people in Oxford

Young people in Oxford can look forward to a brighter future with news that a grant of over £1.8 million will help create a state-of-the-art creative arts centre, using designs inspired by young people.

The Government grant awarded to Pegasus Theatre’s Building the Future project is from the myplace scheme and will create an innovative youth-led dance studio, workshop space, café and improved auditorium to benefit young people in Oxford and across Oxfordshire.

The £1,850,000 grant to the Pegasus Theatre – Building the Future project, in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council, will provide a place to go and new opportunities for young people from the most disadvantaged areas in Oxford.

As well as performing arts they can also get involved in the technical aspects of theatre, including sound engineering, lighting, stage production and set building. For young people with disabilities up to 23 years old and young people excluded from school and not in training or employment, it will give them the chance to learn new skills and make a huge difference to their lives.

Euton Daley, Chief Executive/Artistic Director, Pegasus Theatre, said: “Young people have been intensely involved in every aspect of this redevelopment project – from fundraising to design - not just because they want to see the worn out post-war sheds in which they work replaced, but because they want the new Pegasus to keep the qualities they value like quality, professionalism and ownership. This is a fantastic opportunity for all of us and a leap forward for young people in Oxford.”

The new and improved Pegasus Theatre will be opened six days a week until 10.00pm giving young people a safe, fun and productive place to spend their time. The improved facilities will also see the Building the Future project acting as a flagship centre for youth arts that young people from across Oxfordshire can visit and benefit from.

Ruby Lloyd-Shogbesan, age 15, Pegasus Theatre Members’ Committee, said: “I can’t wait to see the positive impact the new theatre will have on the community. We have all tried so hard to reach the target and everyone involved will feel a huge sense of achievement.”

In addition to learning new skills, building their confidence and meeting new friends, young people will also be able to get one-to-one support at the project and advice on issues such as training, employment and health.
