World-class youth facilities are the place to be in Bournemouth

Young people in Bournemouth are set to enjoy state-of-the-art youth arts facilities on their doorstep following a £1.3 million grant from myplace – a Government grant scheme run by the Big Lottery Fund.

It will see the creation of two new youth centres in Bournemouth, as well as a youth bus that will travel around the town delivering activities to the community.

The project’s hub will be built on the site of the former youth centre at Pokesdown. It will feature a large, sound-proof performance area with lighting, sound and film-projection facilities that can be used for activities from band practice, dance, cinema and theatre to sports like aerobics and trampolining. There will also be areas for young people to socialise including a coffee bar, and a range of other facilities such as multimedia rooms where young people can produce radio programmes, graphics and recordings and a training kitchen where they can learn culinary skills.

Freemantle Hall on Somerset Road, Boscombe, will be transformed into a second venue that will provide much-needed resources to young people in the area. It will offer young people a place where they can get together with friends and relax, including an outside chill-out and barbeque area, but will focus on providing business support to help them to learn and develop social enterprise skills.

A youth bus will deliver activities including media and video facilities within the community, particularly in deprived areas or where there is a lack of activities for young people.

Alex Brennenshaul, 18, from Bournemouth, said of the new facilities: "I think it is an absolutely fantastic idea because it will bring youth together and give them something to do with their time whilst keeping them out of trouble like doing drugs. It also gives them the chance to be creative and develop their talents."

Blair Crawford, Executive Director at Bournemouth YMCA, said: "This is the best news for young people in Bournemouth. It will enable us to provide world-class centres where young people themselves are fully engaged in both development of the new facilities and their ongoing usage and management. Truly the realisation of many dreams."
