Ben Reynolds is the myplace support team Regional Champion for the East Midlands, West Midlands and South West. He is the Senior Associate for Hall Aitken in Wales. Whilst working with Hall Aitken, Ben has managed programmes for the Forestry Commission Wales and has recently taken over the management of support for the Way of Life Programme in Wales. He has also worked on strategic review for the Swansea Environment Forum, undertaken evaluations for the Swansea Recycling Partnership and the WCVAs Strategic Recycling Scheme and is currently providing support for Oxford University on the development of their Public and Community Engagement strategy. Whilst completing his PhD, Ben’s first job was running his own sound hire business and working as a sound engineer. Following that, he was Executive Director of a community music provider in South Wales, delivering a range of live music events and community music education programmes. ‘It seemed easy at the time’ he jokes, ‘but it would probably be enough to kill me now!’ As well as working on a number of third sector initiatives, Ben has been directly responsible for raising over £2million for projects in South Wales and has sat on the community assets funding panel, reviewing projects for Objective 1 and Compact funding in Swansea, awarding over £6million. Ben was also instrumental in establishing one of the largest literature prizes in the world; the Dylan Thomas Prize, which awards a bi-ennial £60,000 to the writer, aged under 30, deemed to have written the best work of fiction in the English language. Ben’s greatest pleasure comes from spending time with his family. He lives with his partner and their 2 year old son in a house overlooking Swansea bay, and is expecting his second baby in June. He is a keen Rugby Union fan and, after many years of perseverance, is now enjoying Wales’ winning streak. Ben is also an avid Ospreys fan and is hoping that this might be the year for European success. Each week, he plays touch rugby for a local team, claiming to be past the stage where the tackling part of the game, and the resulting bruises, is fun. Is Ben any good? ‘To say that my level of ability is that of an enthusiastic amateur is probably charitable!’ he laughs. A keen pianist, Dr. Reynolds has played in various blues, soul and rock bands; ‘think Commitments or Blues Brothers, and you’re on the right lines.’ Once, Ben played a gig in a hotel where, unbeknownst to him, the management had made a mistake with the booking. ‘The crowd were expecting a Gloria Estefan tribute and ended up with us playing our own blues and rock material. It was packed out and only two or three people were clapping, but we had to finish in order to get paid.’
