Author: Sarah Schulman and Tim Davies; The National Youth Agency, 2007

Interest in Positive Youth Development (PYD) in England and the United Kingdom has grown in recent years. A number of evidence reviews  looking at programmes to prevent teenage pregnancy have identified PYD models as promising. From 2004 till 2007, the Young Peoples Development Project, funded by the Department for Health, piloted youth work interventions based on PYD theory at 27 sites across England. Aiming High for Young People, the 2007 Ten Year Youth Strategy for Positive Activities draws upon youth development in setting out its theoretical foundations. However, there has not been a systematic exploration of the key features of PYD for an English audience. This paper is intended to start the exploration.
