Multi-million award serves up youth centre for SouthendA BRAND new youth centre is on its way for Southend’s young people including a restaurant to train budding chefs. A £3 million Government grant has been awarded for the new centre. The funding is the result of a successful bid to the Government’s myplace programme and will see the creation a multi-million-pound facility for Southend on Sea Borough Council’s Shoeburyness Youth Centre project. An existing youth centre in Shoeburyness will be demolished to make way for the modern building serving local young people aged 10-19 years. This new development will be the base for a restaurant giving training and work placements to budding chefs. It will also house a dance studio, gym, IT suite, soundproofed music area and large hall complete with climbing wall. Those without a head for heights can aim for a big break in the snooker room or get their hands dirty in a bike and motor vehicle workshop. Janice Lyons, Local Services Manager, said: “This will create a landmark building for Shoeburyness and provide seven days a week access to services and facilities. It will challenge perceptions of what youth facilities have to be like and who they are for. Most of all it will raise aspiration by sending out a positive message about Shoeburyness and provide a building that local people can be proud of”. Jonathan Clark, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the Eastern region, said: “Thousands of young people will benefit from the high quality music, art and sport facilities that Shoeburyness Youth Centre will provide them with. The project will create a focal point for the local community, created through the enthusiasm of the local youth.” Total Award: £2,988,362 |
