STEPS: Weymouth Young People's Union, a collaboration project between Dorset County Council and STEPS Club for Young People, will use its £3,056,240 grant for an innovative project which will provide a wide range of leisure time activities that are safe, affordable, challenging, developmental and fun. Young people have helped towards the design of the new facility, known as the STEPS club for young people.

The new STEPS club will be open 11 hours a day, seven days a week; and six evenings a week between 5.00pm to 10.00pm as an open access youth centre. It will offer a range of activities including dance, drama, aerobics, football, netball, cricket, kabaddi, hockey, a cinema and a café run by young people. Other services available at The Hub will address sexual health issues, mental health and self-harming, coping with exams and stress, family breakdown, relationships, bullying, education, employment and training opportunities.

Additionally facilities will be available at the Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC), part of the same project but located at the Spoke building which will also be open every day and at least two evenings a week. It will offer sports activities such as canoeing, sailing, archery, martial arts, endurance sports, dance and climbing.

A young person who was part of the team that compiled the bid, Amber McNaughton, 16, said: "This is amazing news for young people in Weymouth and Portland. Our project will give young people like myself fantastic opportunities and support in the future so we are all really excited."

This youth-led project will involve two sites in Weymouth and will benefit young people aged 13-19, particularly those not in education or employment and young parents. The main centre will open 11 hours a day, seven days a week and will offer dance, cinema, football, cricket, netball and a café. Advice services will address sexual health, mental health, bullying, education and training opportunities. The second site will offer outdoor activities, canoeing, sailing, archery and climbing.
