Multi-millions to make South Leeds youth centre the place to be

Young people in South Leeds will soon be seeing the benefit of a new world-class youth centre after success in their bid for close to £5 million of funding from myplace.

The name for the new centre will be decided by a competition inviting local young people’s suggestions.

The new centre will be an extension of what was the sports hall at Merlyn Rees High School on the Belle Isle Estate and will include sports courts, an arts studio, and opportunities to have training in motorcycle repair and hairdressing.

There will also be chances for young people to receive careers guidance, as well as confidential relationship guidance and drug and alcohol education at the scheme, which has received funding of £4,979,376.

Councillor Stewart Golton, Executive Member responsible for children's services at Leeds City Council - which will run the centre along with other partners - said: "Young people from South Leeds have driven this bid forward from the start. Their vision will transform the standard facilities already available into something that is really special. Now all we need is a really special name to go with it."

Ingi Hughes, 15, a local young person involved with the project, said: “For many of us, being part of the planning for the new centre was the first time we’d worked with adults like this. Through discussions we managed to get some things changed, like the buggy room, music and art rooms. It felt quite cool to influence such a big, important project, and now we’ve been successful it’s a sure deal and I can point to it and say ‘I was part of that!’”
