North East Youth get Creative with Multi-Million Pound Centres
Middlesbrough myplace
Young people in Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcar are stepping up to the challenge to help design and develop state-of-the-art youth centres thanks to nearly £15 million in government grants announced today. A disused building in Middlesbrough will be transformed into a state-of-the-art centre for young people aged eight to 19 years old with the help of a £4 million myplace award. With limited leisure choices in Middlesbrough, the centre is greatly needed. The GRADE II listed Custom House will house a performance and dance hall, café, chill out space, crèche, climbing wall, media studio, interactive library, music facilities, gym and a bowling alley. Outdoors, there will be a multi-use sports pitch, allotments and wildlife gardens. Thomas Bielby, Chair of the Youth Council, 18, has been involved with the project. He said: "Not only is it great news that young people of Middlesbrough have achieved a Potential top class youth facility but we also have contributed to the design and running of a town-wide decision making process!” A range of services for young people will be on offer, including volunteering, learning and work advice and programmes, provided by a range of partners including Tees Valley Arts, Middlesbrough Football in the Community, Tees Valley Community Foundation, Community Network, Safe in Tees Valley and Community Ventures Ltd.
