West Yorkshire Youth given £20 Million of OpportunitiesYoung people in West Yorkshire will soon be recording their own music, honing their skills on the climbing wall and getting involved in performing arts at two new youth centres funded by multi-million pound government grants. The HUT – One Hut, Five Towns, Many Talents is a Wakefield Metropolitan District Council project, aiming to bring youngsters from the towns of Castleford, Pontefract, Normanton, Knottingley and Featherstone together in a world-class youth centre. The new building, situated in the Airedale Estate of Castleford, will feature a sports hall, bowling alley and sports courts, as well as a ‘chill out’ zone, computer lab, cinema, and conference areas. The project will also work in close partnership with schools to provide an alternative curriculum. Activities, targeted at young people aged 13-19, will include performing arts, film, computer gaming, tenpin bowling, cookery and sports. Support services on a range of issues such as alcohol, pregnancy and sexual health, social skills and healthy eating will also be offered. Total Award: £5,000,000
