Work gets under way at The Hub project

The HubConstruction work has now started at The Hub in Teesdale, County Durham. The centre will offer young people aged 13-19 the opportunity to take part in a range of indoor and outdoor pursuits on a 15-acre site of natural beauty in rural Barnard Castle.

The centre will be split into separate activity zones to include a BMX/cycle track, skateboarding bowl, and adventure area with climbing boulders, ropes course and ‘zip-line'. Those looking to get creative will make use of the music recording and rehearsal areas, dance and drama studios, and art and media rooms contained within The Hub building itself.

The Hub TeesdaleThe Hub has received over £5m of government funding and it would seem the money has been put to good use, with additional activities including canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing. The building itself is also at the cutting edge of design, featuring an innovative undulating roof made out of a single piece of aluminium.

Phil Hughes, Founder and Chairman of Teesdale Community Resources, the team behind The Hub, is delighted with how the building work is coming along. He said: "Everyone here is really excited to see the centre coming together. We are so pleased it is starting to take shape. The project is brilliant for young people in the area, it's really going to show what they can do for the community and for themselves."

The project is slated for completion on 10th October 2010, and Phil believes they are on track for that date. "We are a little behind at the moment, mainly because of bad weather, but we are still on course for completion. We have got a busy few months ahead, but by the end of March we hope to have the roof on, and then everything else should slot in place after that."

The Hub TeesdaleThe Hub TeesdaleClugston Construction is the company brought in to undertake the work. Clugston Construction's North East regional manager Steve Waggett said: "We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to develop such an exciting scheme. We are looking forward to building what will become a long term, sustainable facility, not only for the young people of the Teesdale community but the wider community as a whole."
