Young people have a multi-million pound place to call their ownYoung people from around Dartford will soon be recording their own music, playing sports, using computers and accessing training courses at a new youth-led project funded by a Government grant of over £2.2million. The Hub project at YMCA Thames Gateway in Dartford town centre has been designed by young people for young people and will benefit eight to 21 year olds all over Kent. It is awarded funding as part of the myplace programme. The £2,250,000 will create The Hub by refurbishing and extending YMCA Thames Gateway building so that disadvantaged young people from around the Dartford area, can access a new music studio, rehearsal room, multi-use activity area, IT suite and chill-out lounge. With plans to open up to seven days a week and until 10.00pm, it will give young people a safe, fun and productive place to spend their time. The Hub will also provide a place where young people can go for advice, counselling and educational courses and will particularly benefit those who are not currently in education, training or employment. Working in partnership with Kent County Council and Dartford Borough Council the project will also include outreach work throughout Kent and bring IT, music and sports equipment to young people in more isolated, rural areas. Denise Hatton, CEO, YMCA Thames Gateway, said: “The myplace grant is fantastic news, as it will provide exciting opportunities for young people in Dartford. The redevelopment of our town centre building will create a world class youth facility for all young people to engage in positive leisure time activities, meet new friends and access information and guidance.” The project has evolved over the last 3 years out of a shared vision between the YMCA, Kent County Council, Dartford Borough Council and young people and it will provide a range of innovative activities in a safe and vibrant environment that has been designed by young people for young people Alison Rowe, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the South East, said: “This project is fantastic news for Dartford and really puts young people at the forefront of its design, day-to-day management and future direction. Half of the BIG committee that made the decision to award the grant to The Hub was also made up of young people, to insure the funding is giving young people what they want and therefore ensuring they get the most out of it.” Total Award: £2,250,000 |
