Even More Fun to be at the YMCA with Government Grant for YouthYoungsters in Lincoln will soon have a place to call their own, after successfully bidding for close to £5 million of funding for a world-class youth centre.
The £4,892,500 grant, from the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ myplace programme and administered by the Big Fund, the non Lottery funding operation of the Big Lottery Fund, will transform a disused car showroom in the city centre into an exciting hub for young people. A total of almost £20 million is being ploughed into four youth projects across the East Midlands. The Showroom, a project led by Lincolnshire YMCA, will boast indoor and outdoor games areas, performing arts space, a recording studio, gym, climbing wall, cyber café and car simulator where visitors can learn about safer driving. Targeted at youngsters aged 13-19, activities on offer will include arts and crafts, music, media, IT and gaming, drama, dance and sports. The centre will aim to reach isolated young people, such as those with disabilities and who have been excluded from mainstream education. Onsite support will be available, including sexual health advice, life skills training and accredited courses. Laura Killingsworth, 16, a young person who has been involved in developing the project, said: “It’s nice to have someone listen to what we want.” Kirsty Robinson, also 16, added: “The Showroom will keep young people out of trouble, as there’s nothing to do around here.” Project Leader Malcolm Barham at Lincolnshire YMCA said: “This project is a great example of true partnership working, involving private and public sector organisations, and most importantly the young people themselves in developing the centre they want.” Total Award: £4,892,500 |
