Press Release - The Young Persons Village

Multi-million pound centre is place to be for Stoke-on-Trent youth

Youngsters in North Staffordshire will soon have a place to call their own, after successfully bidding for a multi-million pound Government grant for a new world-class youth centre.

The Young Person’s Village (YPV) has been awarded over £4.8million as part of the myplace programme. The project is a dramatic redevelopment of an existing YMCA centre, and will benefit some of the county’s most vulnerable young people.

Developments at the Young Person’s Village will include a library and learning zone, basement areas under exisiting residential blocks to hold exhibitions, and a new sports hall and changing rooms. Currently, young people in Stoke-on-Trent have to travel miles to reach good sports facilites which results in many hanging around on the streets.

With the completion of the youth hub, it is hoped this will change. The Young Person’s Village will be a place for youngsters to meet, get support and find accommodation.

Activities will be targeted at some of the most vulnerable young people in North Staffordshire, including those excluded from school and ex-offenders. Around 30 per cent will be from households which fall into the 10 per cent most deprived in the UK.

Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire YMCA, in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, aim to provide a safe place to find advice, guidance and leisure facilities, as well as breaking down barriers with the wider community due to negative perceptions of their work.

The international standard sports facilities will be used to promote county events, and local clubs and groups will also be able to hire them, ensuring the sustainability of the project.

Sharon Richards, Deputy Chief Excutive and Project Developer of the Young Person’s Village, said: “This funding will enable the YMCA to deliver an exciting range of activities, sports and services developed to meet the needs of young people in North Staffordshire.

“Working in partnership with the local authority and young people’s services, we will build aspirations and futures, enabling them to make a positive impact on North Staffordshire.”

John Taylor, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the West Midlands, said: "Young people have been involved in the new Young People's Village every step of the way, ensuring this investment will provide a safe and welcoming place for vulnerable young people to go for advice, guidance and leisure activities. By opening up their sports facilities to local clubs, I'm sure the Young People's Village will quickly become a hub for local young people and have a positive impact on the wider community."
