£10 Million of Opportunities for Merseyside YouthYoungsters across Merseyside will soon be reaping the benefits of a dynamic new youth facilities programme awarding close to £9.8 million announced today through the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ (DCSF) myplace programme. Liverpool City Council score with £2.3 million for a project to extend and refurbish Toxteth Youth and Sports Centre. The new centre will expand a variety of leisure and social opportunities to include a climbing wall, an IT room, and a small cinema room and chill out area complete with snack bar where youngsters can get together and chat. The centre will also offer many creative activities opportunities such as dance, drama and arts and crafts, along with vocational, educational, volunteering and mentoring programmes to include youngsters from a wide variety of backgrounds. Targeting young people aged 10 to 18, the centre which will be open at the times young people want, such as Friday and Saturday evenings, will also offer frontline advice and counselling services on drug and alcohol, sexual health, diet and nutrition and educational issues. The project will work in partnership with local organisations including, Kingsley Utd FC and Liverpool 8 Sports Forum. Project supporter Claire Murphy, aged 18 said: “ This is great news for Toxteth. It’s a brilliant idea to have a youth centre within a sports centre. It will give us more opportunities to try out new activities and gain new experiences.’’ Total Award: £2,300,000 |
