North East Youth get Creative with Multi-Million Pound Centres
Young people in Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcar are stepping up to the challenge to help design and develop state-of-the-art youth centres thanks to nearly £15 million in government grants announced today.
Unrivalled arts and media facilities are promised for Tees Valley with Tuned In, a new centre made possible with a £5 million award, in Redcar. The new seashell-shaped centre, being developed with local young people, will be situated adjacent to the beach and will fuse together the natural and built environment.
The innovative centre will form part of a prestigious development, located in the heart of local regeneration works, which includes dedicated sports and leisure facilities.
Although there are community youth services across the borough, there are no new, modern, purpose-built facilities for young people in the area and the new centre will provide a wide range of positive activities for young people aged 13 to 19 in the area, helping them to improve their lives.
As local young people say they needed more opportunities to participate in arts and culture, the new centre will include arts and crafts, gaming, drama and performances, design, music, media, film and theatre production, animation and radio. Opening hours will be flexible, according to the need of the young people using the centre.
Services such as education, training, housing, health, and money management advice will be provided the centre’s partners including Safe in Tees Valley Connexions, Redcar and Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency, Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Service.
