Kingston upon Hull City Council receives a grant of £5 million enabling building work on Hull YP Interchange to begin next year. The project will see a striking, environmentally sound five-storey building created on a prime city centre site.

The new centre will be open until 10pm seven days a week, offering a wide range of activities which will provide new opportunities for young people - performing arts such as dance, drama and music recording, digital media and film making and urban sports including free-running and skateboarding. Health services and support on issues from teenage pregnancy to careers will also be on offer.

Nigel Richardson, Director of Children and Young People's Services at the council, said: "Young people have been in the driving seat for this project, and have come up with some fantastic ideas for what they want. Our aim now is to make these ideas a reality and provide a place for young people to enjoy as well as somewhere they can access a range of support services."

Helena Richards, a young person who has been involved in developing the plans, said: "It is a wonderful achievement for Hull to have the myplace bid accepted as it can bring more opportunities, and encourage more young people to get involved." Another young person, Shane Lewis, added: "Fantastic! It will be a great place for me and my friends, we made it happen."

This youth-led project in the centre of Hull will create an environmentally sound five-storey building that will provide young people with activities including performing arts, skateboarding, parkour, music recording and film making. There will be chill-out zones, access to healthy food and drink and enterprise units. Support services will include advice on accommodation, substance misuse and teenage conception, careers and training. Opening hours will be 9.00am to 10.00pm seven days a week.
