Newcastle Young People Keep their Eye on the BallYoung people in Newcastle are teaming up to design and develop a major new centre with a government grant of £5 million announced today. The new Myplace@Vine Street in Newcastle, made possible with £5 million of myplace funding, is being developed by Newcastle City Council with local young people as a world-class centre for the community, offering a wide range of sports, leisure activities and services. Open seven days week, it will be an attractive alternative venue in the town centre. The new centre’s range of activities includes sports such as I-ball (a range of sports played illuminated by ultraviolet). The centre for 13 to 19 year olds will also have music decks, a chill out zone a café with free internet access and a hairdressing salon for training. Support services will include agencies providing sexual health education, counselling and mental health advice by the centre’s partners, including Streetwise and Barnardos. UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) member, James Bartle, 16, said: “UKYP representatives in Newcastle are delighted to hear that the city has been successful with the myplace bid. We will now have a fantastic venue in the heart of the city centre for all young people to enjoy. We will continue to work with the project to make it the best youth venue in the country.” Total Award: £4,924,422 |
